Audiobooklets & Sonification

The biggest part of our work is production of audio booklets on various topics. We focus on topics that are related to space weather and yet, considering that space weather itself is not a part of highschool education, are taught in secondary schools.

The audiobooklets were produced by pur team at BIRA-IASB, and reviewed by teachers and students from De Kade.

You can listen to the audio booklets and sounds directly here. If you would like to know what tactile images and 3D model scan accompany the audio booklets, visit the section Topics.

The Aurora audiobooklet offers a rich, descriptive audio journey into one of nature’s most fascinating phenomena. It explains how auroras are formed, their connection to solar activity, and how we observe them from Earth.

Designed to support learners with blindness or visual impairment, but it is accessible and engaging for all audiences.

The following sonification of the aurora was created from video captured aboard the International Space Station, orbiting more than 400 km above Earth. In the audio, the lower notes represent red auroral emissions, the mid-range notes correspond to green, and the highest notes indicate the appearance of blue.

Sonification: Aurora  #2

The following sonification of the aurora was created from a timelapse video recorded near a lake in Finland. As the aurora dances across the night sky, its colors are translated into sound: the lower notes represent red, the mid-range notes correspond to green, and the highest notes indicate the appearance of blue.
