The Aurora

Auroras are beautiful natural light displays that appear near the polar regions. They are caused by charged particles from the Sun interacting with Earth’s magnetic field and atmosphere.

To show the wavy and dynamic movement of auroras, we used organza fabric. It is soft and light, allowing us to shape it into flowing curves that mimic the dancing lights in the sky. A piece of organza is stapled from the back side of the paper, so when lifted, the aurora can be explored in three dimensions, adding a feeling of movement.

To capture the sharper, structured ribbons that often appear in auroras, we used organza ribbon with wire edges. The wire allows the ribbon to be bent into elegant waves and fixed in place above the horizon, representing the layered structure of the aurora.

The black rubber horizon shows the contrast between the night sky and the aurora, helping to orient the scene and guide tactile exploration.

Instructions

  • Download the horizon template, print it out, (or draw your own), and cut it out.

  • Place it on the black rubber paper and trace around it with a pencil

  • Cut out the horizon shape and set it aside.

  • Cut a piece of organza fabric roughly the size of an A4 sheet.

  • Fold it in several places and staple the folds together.

  • Staple the organza along one of the long edges of the blue paper.

  • Glue the rubber horizon over the staples on the otherside of the blue paper (this way you make sure that the sharper edges will not hurt when exploring the tactile image).

  • Cut two strips of organza ribbon —  about 40 cm and about 25 cm long.

  • Shape each ribbon into gentle waves and  carefully glue them above the horizon line.
